For many of us, we are fine with how we look to others. However, for others, pre-determined shape and size make them cause for ridicule and repeated embarrassment.

Breast augmentation is one way to make a woman’s body more proportionate. It will lift and fill out the breast to a larger size that’s more complementary to the women’s figure. To achieve this result, implants are used to create a natural look.

There are two types of implants used for breast augmentation, saline and silicone. Their variations are listed below:

Saline:

  • According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, saline implants are FDA-approved for women 18 years and older.
  • Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water.
  • The amount of saline used can vary to make the shape, firmness and feel of the breast more individualized.
  • If the saline implant shell leaks, the implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.


Silicone:

  • Silicone implants are FDA-approved for women 22 years and older.
  • Silicone implants are filled with an elastic gel.
  • The gel feels and moves much like natural breast tissue.
  • If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket.
  • A leaking implant filled with silicone gel may not collapse.
  • If you choose these implants, you may need to visit your plastic surgeon regularly to make sure the implants are functioning properly.
  • You may undergo an ultrasound or MRI screening to assess the condition of breast implants.


Talk to your doctor as implant manufacturers occasionally introduce new styles and types of implants. If neither option seems right for you, there may be additional options available.
