For many women, the idea of reconstructing their breasts following a mastectomy is a simple decision. They desperately want to return to their pre-surgical figure as quickly as possible.  Breast reconstruction is achieved through several plastic surgery techniques that strive to restore the breast to near normal shape, appearance and size following a mastectomy.

The surgery itself is fairly routine; however it has end results that need to be considered before making any permanent decisions:

  • A reconstructed breast will not have the same sensation and feel as the previous breast.
  • You will always be able to see the incision lines following the surgery.
  • Since the tissue for the new breast is taken from a donor site on another part of the body, such as the buttocks, abdomen or back, there may be incision lines at that site, as well.
  • If only one breast is being reconstructed, you may need to undergo a breast lift, reduction or augmentation to achieve a symmetrical look.
